Caring for your rugby boots

Your boots are your primary asset on the field and probably have more of an impact on your performance than any other bit of your kit, so it's important to ensure they're kept in tip-top shape by looking after them properly. Following these simple tips after every match or practice will help them last longer, and ensure you don't have any "wardrobe failures" when you can least afford it!

Studs

You should check your studs regularly to make sure they're tightly screwed in and have no sharp edges which can be dangerous to you and other players. And apart from (because of!) the safety aspect, the ref may not allow you to take the field if your studs don't comply.

It's also a good idea to keep a stud wrench and a selection of replacement studs of different lengths in your kitbag in case you need to adapt to the conditions in a hurry.

Uppers

Clean off any mud and grime before it gets hard, and make sure you dry the boots out thoroughly before storing them - helps them smell better, and also prevents mould. It's best to let them dry out naturally, but if you want to speed up the process, you can try stuffing scrunched up newspaper inside to soak up any moisture.

If your uppers are made of leather it's worthwhile treating them regularly with dubbin or wax which helps to keep the leather supple and waterproof.

Laces

Check for any frayed laces and replace if necessary. It's also a good idea to keep a spare pair handy in case you're caught short.

Inner soles

Inner soles are well worth it for the extra comfort, but they wear out quickly, so check them often and replace as soon as they start to wear through. Again, carry a spare pair in your kitbag.

Remember, caring for your rugby boots will ensure they perform better for longer - which can only benefit your game and save you money in the long run.
